A Foodie’s Guide to the Best Restaurants in San Francisco

Testing out local cuisine and restaurants has to be one of the most exciting parts about travelling to a new destination. From local delicacies to fusion-inspired treats from around the world, everywhere you go there seems to be something totally new to try.

San Francisco is a total hot spot for food-loving travelers looking to try some incredible dishes. From traditional American eats to internationally inspired Mexican and Italian dishes, the Bay Area is seriously a foodie’s dream come true and the options can seem endless, especially if you’re stay is short.

We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite food spots in San Francisco to help you plan your visit. Whether you’re looking for a formal sit-down dinner with friends or grabbing a quick bite to eat while you’re exploring the city, we’re sure you’ll find something on this list that you’ll absolutely love.

1. House of Prime Rib – American Cuisine

1906 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco, CA 94109 $$$

The House of Prime Rib has been open in San Francisco since 1949. Known for its infamous 21-day aged prime rib, each meal comes served with all of the traditional English accompaniments from mashed potatoes to Yorkshire puddings. Whether its their cozy fireplaces or the hardwood and leather decor, the House of Prime Rib has a warm and welcoming atmosphere that seriously can’t be topped anywhere else in San Francisco.

The House of Prime Rib is open every evening for dinner starting at 5:30 pm and if prime rib isn’t your thing, definitely ask your server about their fish option caught fresh daily for their dinner menu!

2. San Tung – Asian Cuisine

1031 Irving St, San Francisco, CA 94122  $$

San Tung serves up traditional Asian cuisine like no other in San Francisco. Its infamous dry fried chicken wings is a must try for anyone visiting, and the rest of their menu is just as good. The wait can get pretty long to grab a table so make sure you show up relatively early if you want to grab a spot!

Be aware the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but its open every other day of the week for lunch and dinner serving so make sure you check it out if you can!

3. Taquería El Farolito – Mexican Cuisine

2779 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110 $

If you’re looking for affordable and delicious Mexican food than Taquería El Farolito is the place for you. Located right near Fisherman’s Wharf, the takeout option available at Taquería El Farolito makes this place a perfect option if you’re looking for great food on the go while exploring the city.

Whether you’re in the mood for tacos or a jam-packed burrito, Taquería El Farolito will have something for you. Open from 10:00 AM daily its a must stop spot if you’re visiting the Bay Area.

4. Tony’s Pizza Napoletana – Italian Cuisine

1570 Stockton St, San Francisco, CA 94133 $$

Tony’s Pizza Napoletana is home to the 12-time World Pizza Champion Tony Gemignani. Tony’s Pizza Napoletana is located right in the Little Italy neighbourhood of San Francisco and all their ingredients are imported straight from Napoli in Italy. Not feeling pizza? They also offer a wide range of pasta and other traditional Italian dinners for their patrons!

Want to enjoy some authentic Italian food right from the comfort of your Airbnb or hotel room? Tony’s Pizza Napoletana is also part of Uber Eats so you can try this local hotspot while snuggled up in bed after a busy day of adventuring around the Bay Area.

5. Golden Boy Pizza – Italian Cuisine

542 Green St, San Francisco, CA 94133 $

Golden Boy Pizza’s trademark pizza is made using freshly baked focaccia topped with all of your favorite toppings. At the young age of 19, founder Peter Sodini opened the very first Golden Boy Pizza location on Green Street in San Francisco’s North Beach area.

While Golden Boy Pizza has scaled down over the years, the original location on Green Street remains a local hotspot for grabbing some incredible and authentic tasting pizza. Family-run the location is now operated by Peter’s sons and is open from 11:30 AM each day offering a low-cost, easy and delicious lunch option while you’re on the move.

6. La Taqueria – Mexican Cuisine

2889 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110   $

Similar to La Taquería El Farolito, La Taqueria is another great and affordable Mexican option right in the heart of San Francisco. Easy to locate via public transit just get off at the 24th and Mission Street stop and walk one block down to 25th Street. Serving everything from tacos to quesadillas La Taqueria is a must visit spot for any fan of Mexican food visiting the Bay.

If you can’t make up your mind about what to get, we recommend trying one of their traditional, rice-free burritos. La Taqueria is open from 11:00 AM Wednesday-Sunday, just be aware if you’re planning a visit the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays!

7. Wayfare Tavern – American Cuisine

558 Sacramento St, San Francisco, CA 94111  $$$

Opened in 2010 the Wayfare Tavern is an American style restaurant who’s ambience and food makes it a must-visit spot in San Francisco. Inspired by local cuisine the tavern features tons of modern dishes that are sure to impress its patrons.

Not overly hungry? The Wayfare Tavern also features a full-service bar making it a great option to grab a drink at the end of the day with friends. Our favorite menu item? The Petaluma Farms Devilled Eggs served with Dungeness crab, avocado and lime.

8. Fog Harbor Fish House – Seafood Cuisine

Pier 39, San Francisco, CA 94133  $$$

Located right on Pier 39, Fog Harbor Fish House is the ultimate waterfront dining experience in San Francisco. With a gorgeous view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Fog Harbor Fish House is a definite crowd-pleaser for locals and tourists alike. With a business spanning over three decades, Fog Harbor Fish House puts a priority on using sustainably sourced seafood and meats which is something we absolutely love about them!

Family-operated over three generations, its not uncommon to find one of the Simmons family members strolling around the dining room greeting patrons. Our favorite menu option? Their award-winning Clam Chowder, available in a freshly baked sourdough bread bowl.

9. Beretta – Italian Cuisine

1199 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94110 $$

Beretta is a super hip bar and pizzeria that offers patrons brunch, lunch, dinner and late-night options. Not only is their pizza incredible, but their extensive cocktail menu makes Beretta a place that you seriously can’t miss on your visit to the Bay Area.

They take reservations so call ahead and reserve a spot if you plan on coming with a large group! Beretta is open Monday-Friday starting at 5:30 PM and 11:00 AM on weekends to serve their brunch and lunch menu options!

From classic Italian pizzas featuring ingredients imported straight from the heart of Italy, to traditionally inspired Mexican cuisine and modern day twists on popular American menu items, San Francisco truly is a foodie’s dream come true.

Travel can be an incredible way to get a taste for local culture and there truly is no better way to do that than by sampling some of the local foods and delicacies on offer.
